As a human you know doing anything without judgement is challenging but one case reminded me how important it really is. We partner with local cancer treatment centers to help patients in treatment. A lot of cancer centers have their own patient assistance programs but if the cancer center cannot help with the patients' needs they refer them to us. One woman initially reached out for help with groceries and hygiene products which we happily delivered but after chatting we uncovered a larger problem. The family had been unable to keep up with their trash bills and the company cut off their service. They didn't know what do so trash had been piling up in their backyard for a year. We discussed the panic you feel when staring down a momentous problem and seeing no solution. We talked about the shame of failing, the shame of filling your yard with trash. We knew we had to help. We paid the past due invoices and had a company remove the trash. Can you imagine going through cancer treatment, being sick, being tired, struggling with bills and hiding a pile of trash in your back yard. So we give without judgment.
