Why October 10 Matters: World Mental Health Day & the Gifts That Give Hope Fair

How the Gifts That Give Hope Fair honors World Mental Health Day and the power of coming together.

October 10 Is World Mental Health Day

This year, the Gifts that Give Hope Fair is taking place on one of the most auspicious days of the year- October 10, 2026. October 10 represents a number of different causes and events, but one near and dear to us here at the Gifts that Give Hope Fair is World Mental Health Day. The 2026 World Mental Health Day theme is “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”

The day was established in 1992 to raise awareness for mental health access for all without stigma or shame. What we have all come to figure out is that we need so much support for our mental health. All of our nonprofits, even if they don’t directly serve mental health, support mental health. From food security to literacy, every single one of our participating nonprofits understands the need to support the whole individual to support their mental health. As any student in a basic psychology class will share, Maslow's hierarchy of needs is the foundation that allows an individual to grow and connect with their community.

How Community Support Strengthens Well-Being

And it's not just the nonprofits that understand the importance of mental health; all of our vendors who support and sell Fair Trade and direct-impact goods understand that paying someone a fair wage provides economic security, which improves their ability to support their families and avoid being crushed by the weight of poverty.

Connection Is Part of the Gift

We all support Mental Health Day and decided this day, October 10, was when we would hold our fair, bring the community together, and celebrate the good works being done. We have all heard of the loneliness epidemic and how it contributes to a decline in mental and physical health. We decided that on this day we would gather at the Farm and Home Center and embrace all community members, fair participants, volunteers, and organizers, and for just a few hours experience the pure joy that happens when we find each other. We will surround each other with warm greetings, sincere questions about how they have been, and offers to sit and have a cup of coffee or partake in the array of food from the food trucks; we will hear the stories of our social enterprise businesspeople and nonprofit representatives. We will connect, rediscover our optimism for the future, and leave the fair just a little happier than we walked in.

October 10 Is Also a Day to Think About Inclusion and Housing

As for the other observances of October 10, they include World Inclusion Day, which brings global awareness for the celebration and acceptance of the diversity of religions, abilities, genders, races, and ages—a general acceptance that we all belong and we are all of value. Small acts of kindness, found throughout the fair, can support this day celebrating what makes all of us unique and wonderful!

World Homeless Day is also observed on October 10, and it is a call to action to recognize that everyone deserves a safe place to live. At least seven of our participating nonprofits will be able to discuss what they are doing to support the unhoused in our community.

And Yes, There’s Even Angel Food Cake

And finally, October 10 celebrates one of our favorite treats—National Angel Food Cake Day! This light, delicious, fluffy wonder makes everyone happier.

Come Find Your People and Your Place to Make a Difference

Come celebrate and honor this auspicious day by being supported by the best and brightest in our community, all working hard to better our world and bring beauty to each of us. Honor the work, eat the great food, clear your shopping list, find a new friend, cause, and maybe, just maybe, find a piece of the ethereal decadence known as angel food cake.
