For too many days, she has felt overwhelmed by world events, fearful of what is happening and what is to come, feeling isolated and alone. It is profoundly easy to hide in her work and responsibilities. One morning, however, she decides it's time to see something new, go somewhere unexpected, and possibly, break free from the ennui that seems to lie on her like a weighted blanket.
A First Visit to the Gifts That Give Hope Fair
Today, Saturday, October 10, 2026, she decides instead to visit the Gifts That Give Hope Alternative Gift Fair at the Lancaster Farm & Home Center. She does not know what to expect, but maybe this new event will be the tonic she needs.
Excited by the possibilities, she dresses and readies herself. She finds the event easily, with signs and balloons directing her just off Manheim Pike. She arrives when the fair doors open at 10 a.m. Parking is so easy – no parallel parking for her.
Food trucks are already in place, so she decides to treat herself to a fun latte. There, as she chats with the barista, she asks about Fair Trade coffee. What makes Fair Trade different from other products? She is told that Fair Trade simply means the farmers were paid a fair wage for their product, often with better working conditions for growers and the plants.
Onward to the fair with her Fair Trade coffee in hand and full of excitement for this new experience.
“Good morning! We are so glad you came today. Have you been here before?” She is immediately greeted. When she tells the volunteer it’s her first time, the volunteer offers her name and asks, “Would you like me to show you the different parts of the fair? With a quick yes, she is given an overview and a map to help her navigate to whatever interests her.
Exploring Nonprofits and Meaningful Gifts
In the main hall, our heroine can chat with representatives from more than 30 local, national, and international non-profits, and discover which ones interest her. She learns that she can discuss ways to volunteer with the organizations or she can make a donation as a gift for her friends and family who are normally so hard to buy for.
Ethical Shopping With a Story Behind It
In another room, she browses a room of items from local entrepreneurs, all of whom sell their wares to support philanthropic causes. The expansive shopping area features an array of gifts that help her feel good about her purchase, each with a story behind it. These shopkeepers also enjoy sharing their goals, practices, and how the consumer can be a powerful force for good.
Finding Connection and Community
Her first visit finishes in the lobby, where community clubs and groups invite interested parties to join them and participate in their upcoming events. Intermixed with these groups, she sees children participating in a scavenger hunt to win a pile of books.
One thing is clear: This is going to be an incredible day full of connection, inspiration, discovery, and joy.
